Deep groove, or single row radial, ball bearings are the most widely used bearings. They utilize an uninterrupted raceway that makes them optimal for radial loads .This design permits precision tolerance, even at high-speed operation.
NTN ball bearings use standard cages of pressed steel, as well as machined, brass cages for high-speed applications. NTN also offers bearings with locating snap rings.
PRELUBRICATED BEARINGS
Prelubricated bearings have integral seals, or shields, which are packed with long-life grease. In many applications, these bearings can be used without supplementary seals, closures, or protective devices. This design also offers the lowest possible manufacturing costs to the end user.
Shielded ball bearings are protected on one or both sides by metal shields that are fastened to the outer ring. This close clearance labyrinth seal retains the lubricant and prevents the entrance of foreign matter.
Sealed ball bearings incorporate steel-reinforced rubber seals that are securely fastened to a groove on the outer ring. Contact with the inner ring provides positive sealing at all times. We also offer a variety of contact, light-contact, and non-contact seals to help you to dial in your protection
while balancing your speed and torque requirements.
TMB BEARINGS: LIGHTER WEIGHT AND LONGER LIFE
With the heightened performance of today’s machinery, bearings are being used at higher loads and speeds. As a result, the industries using this machinery demand bearings with longer-lasting, compact designs, at lighter weights and lower costs. When manufacturing these bearings,
however, stringent industry requirements must be met without changing the configuration of the related parts.
SINGLE ROW ANGULAR CONTACT
Single row angular contact ball bearings feature raceways with high and low shoulders. These opposing raceways are designed to carry thrust load in one direction. NTN can preload the bearings at the factory so that the correct load will develop once the bearing is put into service. The bearings in this series are assembled with a specific internal clearance, so that they will have a specified contact angle under load. The standard contact angle used by NTN is 30° but, in many cases, a 40° contact angle can also be specified.
We also offer special high-speed bearings with phenolic resin cages with a 15° contact angle.
DOUBLE ROW ANGULAR CONTACT
Double row angular contact ball bearings have an inner and outer ring with a double raceway. The two rows are so related that the contact angle is similar to a pair of back-to-back single row bearings. NTN’s 5200 and 5300 series offer continuous races and can carry thrust loads in either direction. The 3200 and 3300 series have filling slots, so it is necessary to mount them with the thrust load acting against the un-notched face of the rings.
INSULATED
TWO OPTIONS TO PREVENT ELECTRICAL PITTING DAMAGE
Electrical pitting often occurs in bearings used in electrical equipment, such as motors and power generators, as a result of current leakage. An electrical current present near a bearing can flow to the inside of the bearing, causing sparks that damage the rolling contact surface, ultimately leading to bearing failure. This electrical pitting and can be prevented with coated bearings or ceramic hybrid bearings.
COATED BEARINGS
NTN’s MEGAOHM™ Series of insulated bearings has been specifically designed to counteract electrical pitting. These bearings are available in both ceramic and resin versions that are suited to a variety of applications. Coating the outer ring of the bearing provides a barrier (capable of resisting at least 100 Megaohms at 500 VDC) against any stray currents that would pass through the bearing.
MEGAOHM™ Series bearings are featured as OEM equipment on wind turbine generators, traction motors for railway cars, and variable speed electric motors in wastewater treatment facilities.
CERAMIC HYBRID BEARINGS
For especially problematic applications, NTN offers ceramic hybrid bearings. Using conventional steel inner and outer rings, silicon nitride rolling elements provide excellent electrical insulation while reducing rotating mass and improving heat dissipation.
SPECIALTY
Double-row, self-aligning bearings utilize an inner ring with a single spherical raceway. In this configuration, the inner and outer rings can be misaligned relative to each other. The resulting effect is a comparatively large single angle that imposes moment loads upon the balls. The boundary dimensions of self-aligning bearings can be the same as standard ball bearings.
NEEDLE ROLLER BEARINGS
Needle bearings feature a smaller cross-section, higher load-carrying capacity, greater rigidity, and lower inertia forces that facilitate size and weight reductions in machinery. They’re designed to withstand oscillation, perform under severe conditions, and interchange with sliding bearings.
Diverse types of needle bearings are available in a wide variety of sizes and tolerances, for a multitude of applications.
Needle roller and cage assemblies are offered in single or double row, solid or split cage, metric and inch sizes; as well as in connecting rod bearings for special applications.
Single and double row bearings are available with or without ribs, and with or without inner rings.
Thrust bearings are offered in single row roller and cage assemblies.
Yoke and stud type track rollers are also available.
SPHERICAL ROLLER BEARINGS
Spherical roller bearings are dedicated to extremely severe applications and must support high loads, severe misalignment, contaminated environments, shocks, and vibrations. And with the industry’s highest load rating and production coming from a factory near you, there’s no reason to look anywhere else for spherical roller bearings.
THE INDUSTRY’S HIGHEST LOAD RATING
NTN-SNR sphericals feature the industry’s highest load rating: a full 18% higher than a standard spherical roller bearing. This level of quality means at least a 75% extension of service life. The performance of these sphericals is achieved through the use of very high quality raw materials and optimized rolling element geometry. The unique design also leads to:
Reduced friction torque (as much as 30% less), offering lower operating temperature, with lower power and lubricant consumption.
Appreciably increased operating speed, allowing an extended scope of applications.
High temperature capacity of up to 200°C (392°F) for metallic cage bearings. Dimensional stability is ensured by a specific heat treatment.
A +/- 0.5° misalignment capability, without reducing the load capacity, and up to 1° 30’ in case of low loads.
CYLINDRICAL ROLLER BEARINGS
Cylindrical roller bearings have rollers that provide a modified line contact with the cylindrical inner and outer ring raceways, while the rollers are guided by ground ribs on either the inner or outer ring. The cylindrical shape allows the inner ring to have axial movement relative to the outer ring. This is especially important when accommodating thermal expansion, where both rings must be press-fitted.
PREMIUM BRANDS, PREMIUM MATERIALS
We offer premium cylindrical roller bearings under the NTN and Bower® brand names. Most NTN and all Bower® cylindrical roller bearings feature case-carburized components. Rings and rollers are made from case-hardened alloy steel of “Bearing Quality” to provide superior fatigue life and reliability. Precise control of heat treatment, dimensions, and surface finish of the components further contribute to reliable bearing performance. So whether you’re looking for an American-made, case-carburized inch series cylindrical, or a metric series through-hardened variety, NTN has you covered with a proper fit to your application. Premium steels and heat treatments are also available for applications requiring extended life and high reliability.
AS HEAT TREATMENT
NTN’s Austenite Strengthening process (AS) is a special heat treatment applied to the rolling elements. By chemically altering the surface chemistry of the roller, NTN is able to create a thin layer of retained Austenite that results in compressive stresses that increase bearing life. AS Treatment alone results in a material life multiplier of 1.5. When used in conjunction with TMB, that life multiplier increases to 3.6.
HL SURFACE TREATMENT
NTN’s unique micro-pitting surface finish increases bearing life in applications with insufficient lubrication.
TAPERED ROLLER BEARINGS
Tapered roller bearings utilize conical rollers and raceways, arranged so that the rollers and raceways meet at a common apex. The rollers are guided by contact between the large end of the roller and a rib on the inner ring. This provides high capacity for radial and single thrust loads.
PREMIUM BRANDS, PREMIUM MATERIALS
We offer premium tapered roller bearings under the NTN and Bower® brand names. Most NTN and all Bower® tapered roller bearings feature case-carburized components. Cups, cones, and rollers are made from case-hardened alloy steel of “Bearing Quality” to provide superior fatigue life and reliability. Precise control of heat treatment, dimensions, and surface finish of the components further contribute to reliable bearing performance. So whether you’re looking for an American-made, case-carburized inch series taper, or a metric series through-hardened variety, we have you covered with a proper fit for your application. Premium steels and heat treatments are also available for applications requiring extended life and high reliability.
SPECIAL ROLLER CROWNING
NTN’s pioneering efforts in developing crowned rollers have resulted in greater load-carrying capability and longer bearing life. Crowned rollers under load distribute stress equally along their full length of contact with the raceways, thereby eliminating stress concentration at the roller ends. This design concept also compensates for minor misalignment between shaft and housing bore and deflection under load, thereby reducing stress
